Review
"...this text presents a more personalised view of the organisation of Biological Psychology than is seen in many other texts in this area, and the presentation of the imformation gains from this approach. Toates has given us an excellent text for the interested student of biological psychology." - Terry D. Blumenthal, Biological Psychology.  "This fat, soft covered, beautifully produced text is particularly pleasant to explore and handle...its packed with information... Here is more than you would ever want to know about the current state of biological knowledge relevant to psychological proceses, a field clearly expanding exponentially." - Alan Large, Australian Journal of Psychotherapy

" I think this text is an exciting, important and highly competitive entrant into this market. It is written for the student by an accomplished writer and educator, and I can recommend it most highly to you" - Neil E. Rowland, Physiology and Behaviour

"...suceeds in its ambition to present an integrated view of biological psychology" - Tom Dickins, Times Higher Education Supplement

"It provides a good, compeling explanations of conventional topics in Physiological psychology" - Patrick Green, Animal Behaviour

"... an accessible and informative text providing an excellent introduction to the biological bases of behaviour... The presentation and organisation of the book are excellent, making use of illustrations that are of an extremely high standard, serving to clarify and inform rather than distract the reader." - Dr Bundy Mackintosh, MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, Cambridge, UK, reviewing on Amazon.co.uk

Product Description
Behaviour, Psychobiology and Introduction to Neuroscience at the undergraduate level which assumes no prior understanding of science. The first four-colour European entrée in this market.  In a visually appealing format, this text approaches the material from an "integrative approach" to help students see the big picture and how such aspects of the brain as neurotransmission and neuroanatomy relate to "real" psychological topics such as emotion, language and learning, sexual behaviour, anxiety, aggression, recovery from brain damage, depression, and pain. The book focuses on the structures and function of brain anatomy first, then introduces the resulting behaviours. By weaving examples and themes from the Social sciences with a solid introduction into the scientific concepts the book's narrative captures students' excitement and provides them with a foundation necessary for optimum understanding of this dynamic field of psychology.  Using state of the art colour illustrations, concepts are introduced and illustrated with great detail and clarity. A solid pedagogical framework throughout to guide students' learning and substantial support and technology package make this text a compelling learning and teaching tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible and informative text, enhanced by web links, 15 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Biological Psychology is an accessible and informative text providing an excellent introduction to the biological bases of behaviour, suitable for both students and other interested readers. It covers a wide range of topics extending from the structure and function of neurones and the nervous system through to development, sleep, motivation and consciousness. As might be expected from its title, the book covers the more 'traditional' subjects such as vision and other sensory systems, explains the structure of the brain and some of its specialised functions, and discusses reflexes and learning. However, emergent areas of research, such as emotion, consciousness and the technique of brain imaging are also very well covered, and the central, and topical, role of genetics and evolution is brought to the fore from the start. Historical background as well as recent references are provided and each topic is well integrated with other research areas. The overall theme and emphasis of the book is clearly justified and the approach related to others disciplines within biology and psychology. The reader is continually encouraged to make links between chapters by the use of good cross-referencing. Included throughout the text are 'personal angle boxes' providing real case studies to add interest to the topic under discussion. Although largely succeeding in their role, if there were any fault to be found it would be that these sometimes seemed too brief and terse. The presentation and organisation of the book are excellent, making use of illustrations that are of an extremely high standard, serving to clarify and inform rather than distract the reader.

Biological Psychology advertises an integrative approach. It succeeds in this aim, not only by presenting a scholarly text set in an appropriate context, but most notably by the addition of comprehensive web links and computer exercises for the reader with access to the internet. The use of this provision allows the pursuit of a range of interests. With ease the reader can, for instance, download up to date research articles, visit web sites of researchers and research institutes, find out what happened to the chimpanzees who were taught sign language, watch video clips of experimental techniques, score themselves on anxiety questionnaires, give themselves a computer test on each chapter, search a glossary, and many, many more activities. The use of this additional tool adds an important new dimension to this book as an aid to study. The references and research techniques, such as brain imaging, within the text are up to date and topical, but it takes very little time before such material can seem dated. The computer links provide a mechanism whereby the author can provide revisions and updates, as well as directing the reader to multiple sources of cutting edge and general interest material.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for an over view., 2 Nov 2006

Brought this book for one module of my anatomy degree, helped me pass it but then i considered selling it. Glad I didnt. I have since read back into it and found it an interesting read covering many topics which have added aspects to much of my work in medicine at present.
Prehaps compare with Barr's Human nervous system and once you have tackled both, you will have a great understanding of that eternal problem. How and where do we think?

5.0 out of 5 stars Biological Psychology, 23 Oct 2006
By Philip James (Windsor, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As an undergraduate student of Biological Psychology, I found this book invaluable. It not only provides a gentle introduction to the topic but also continues in the depth and comprehensiveness necessary for gaining a good understanding. In comparison with other books in this and the neuroscience field I have read, I found it to be unquestionably the best. It is also very readable with now and then a glimpse of the author's sense of humour coming through. If you are even only slightly intrigued by what goes on in the mind and brain then this is the book for you.
