Review

"essential reading for students and...an authoritative and accessible reference work for anyone interested in the Near East."Times Higher Education Supplement

Product Description

This clear, balanced and authoritative survey of the history of the region is now fully up to date again. The text contains a general regional introduction, followed by a series of country-by-country analyses, and a section which places the Near East in the international context. Professor Yapp' s new edition covers recent dramatic events including the end of the Cold War, the Kuwayt Crisis of 1990/91, and the continuing conflict in Israel, as well as assessing the huge social and economic changes in the region. It will be essential reading for students and scholars concerned with modern middle eastern history and politics of the middle east.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, comprehensive and concise work, 14 Oct 2000
By A Customer
There is little need for pictures in this comprehensive yet concise volume in which the text is enough to illustrate the complexities of Near Eastern history in an easily understandable fashion. There is no better one volume history of the Near East.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic account of the History of the Near East, 15 Sep 2009

Having completed an undergraduate degree in History, and a Masters degree in International Politics, I would highly recommend this book to anyone studying the area, or anyone who has an interest and would like to learn more. The book provides an in depth and comprehensive history of the region and has possibly been more helpful to my studies than any other text.

1.0 out of 5 stars An interesting study, unfortunately with a lack of pictures., 14 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This text is one of the worst accounts of middle-eastern history I have ever encountered, in my long and distingusihed career as a full-time historian. While there is much to praise as an undergraducate textbook here, the book is let down significantly by the lack of visual material that would supplement the text and enrich it hugely. The book's material itself is quite frankly misguided, while the attempts at fruitful analysis are not forthcoming in terms of complex and mature argument. Perhaps I am being too harsh in saying it is the very worst study of its type, though in truth, one seeking broad yet specific information on this topic might be better referred towards Hourani or Hasou's approaches, both eminently available for study.
