I'm a non-native speaker of English and have lived in this country for 16 years, and although I have an extensive knowledge of words, this dictionary provides me with all the things I still want to know and learn. Not only does it contain (nearly) all the words, expressions and colloquialisms you might hear (it clearly distinguishes between British and American English), but it also has small drawings of all the terms that are a bit more difficult to explain.

The dictionary is by no means perfect. One example is that they have not included George Elliot, but the Gallagher brothers of Oasis. Neither can I find a West Highland White Terrier (who I feel is a common sight in Britain). Nevertheless, the compilers have tried extremely hard to cover almost every term one might come across and have really managed to focus on contemporary life. Also included is a section of important cultural background information.

I have given this excellent dictionary 5 stars. Even if you're a native English speaker, you will still find it useful as it contains a lot of general knowledge. I would recommend this dictionary to anyone.

This dictionary is actually a very entertaining book for those who are interested in the everyday culture of the English-speaking countries.
It collects a significant portion of all those small details you will never get unless you are born and raised a lucky native speaker:)

In 1568 thin pages, it combines a full coverage of American and British English with the cultural information you need to understand references to people, places, and events in newspapers, in literature, on TV and in films, as well as in general conversations.
Very good for teachers, students (better in Upper Intermediate or Advanced levels) and cultured people in general.
