Product Description

Product Description

Religious education is an area of complexity and controversy which raises many questions throughout education, such as why teach RE in schools? What is the relevance of religion in a secular society? Can anyone teach it? How should world religions be taught? How can students be assessed?

The Effective Teaching of Religious Education seeks to open up the debates surrounding these issues in order to provide clear guidelines for both practising and trainee teachers. Written with a practical concern to improve the quality of RE delivered in schools, this books adopts a clear and direct approach that is balanced and unbiased. Theory and practice are tighly integrated and many practical suggestions and examples are given. The author demonstrates a sensitivity to where RE currently stands and offers practical answers to hard questions and shows how the subject contributes to cross curricular work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Effective Religious Education, 20 May 2003
By Dr Elizabeth Ashton (Newcastle upon Tyne United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is the best book on Religious Education I have ever read. It is full of practical ideas and sound academic theory. It is essential reading for students preparing for either primary or secondary education. Copies of the book ought to be present in all libraries, public and educational.

I particularly warmed to the way in which Brenda Watson related academic material to the needs of pupils and students in the school classroom.

The book covers material required by students for essays during initial teacher training. It is full of ideas and its sound, common sense approach ought to earn it the position of "Winner of the Educational League Cup".
