Review

'Lawson xxx;succeeds in illustrating how the rule of the man he calls 'the most successful of all pre-Conquest rulers of Britain' deserves such close study.'

4.0 out of 5 stars Lead authority on Cnut thrashes incessantly through sources, 4 Sep 2002
I had the pleasure of being taught Medieval History by Dr.Lawson for two years and must stress that this man is a true history enthusiast. His personal knowledge of history in general is immense and i feel that this dedication is shown in this book.
Although I would not really recommend this book to the casual reader, I must state that this is essential reading for anyone who has a desire to experience a comprehensive and competent study of Cnut. Mark my words, this is NOT easy reading and is often slightly confusing, but it is clear that well researched arguments and all the necessary information is present. Dr.Lawson's style of ferociously tearing and thrashing through sources until he has squeezed every last drop of relavent material from them guarantees that ALL the primary and secondary sources on this matter have been fully examined. Certainly a book only to be read at times of peak concentration (c.f. The Pilgrim's Rest!)
This book was essential to my success on the topic at A-Level and has also been immensely useful in my Medieval History studies at Oxford (St.Hugh's). Therefore, students must not overlook this book as being too complex and go for less authoritative pieces but I feel should try to persevere and gain the maximum possible advantage from Lawson's study.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive but exhausting, 4 April 2001
By A Customer
I was taught by Dr Lawson for four years, while he was able to impress upon me some fascination with Anglo-Saxon England it was hard going. This book is no different. Anglo-Saxon history is exhausting work and you have to be a real devotee to enjoy it, however this book makes a bold attempt to keep it interesting, mainly through the author's obvious enthusiasm. So, it is enthusiastic, but still a bit of a slog. If you are anything of an academic then you have probably already read it, if not then there are probably better places to start. Still, in terms of the English canon this remains THE book on Cnut, and that is definitely worth something.

2.0 out of 5 stars Apparently, we know very little about Cnut., 24 Jul 2007
This review is from: Cnut (Paperback)
If you would like to know what it is that we don't know about Cnut and why it is that we don't know it, this is your book. If you enjoy a detailed disquisition of sources that warns you at the end of each paragraph that just because they didn't say it didn't happen doesn't mean we mustn't conclude that it might have, this is your book. If you actually want to know anything about Cnut, set your sights a little lower and skip it.
