Product Description

The sequel to "Golden Witchbreed" tracing Lynne Christie's return to Orthe - a post-technological world laid waste since its dominant culture destroyed itself two millennia earlier. Christie walks a dangerous path, trying to fight trade exploitation and diffuse conflict.

About the Author

Mary Gentle is one of the world's most acclaimed writers of fantasy and science fiction; ASH, the largest single fantasy work ever - longer even than THE LORD OF THE RINGS - combines the authentic details of Bernard Cornwell and the magical storytelling of Terry Goodkind; all editions were Gollancz bestsellers. Mary has a number of academic degrees, including an MA in War Studies, and has hands-on experience of sword-fighting and armour, amongst many other useful talents. She lives in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but others may not like, 17 Aug 2001
I must admit to reading this without reading Golden Witchbreed first, but there seemed to be very little problem in that respect - it is set years later, and enough of the past is explained to prevent the reader from losing their way. I greatly enjoyed this book. Yes, the ending is depressing, but I think it very courageous of Mary Gentle not to glue on a happy ending. It's completely believable, in light of what's happening, though you can't help hoping all through... And that's part of what makes this book so good.

I wasn't so surprised to find darkness in this - the other I'd read before was The Architecture Of Desire. Hardly joyful...

Does it ruin a more hopeful book, knowing what is to come after? It doesn't for me, but for those who think otherwise I'd say weigh the happiness you got from the first against the wish to know what happens in the next... I found this an excellent book, not so good as Ash: A Secret History, but certainly something I'll want to come back to many times, and deserving of its five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere if you want happy endings :), 9 Sep 2000

Yes, after Golden Witchbreed Ancient Light is downright depressing. It is, however, very well written and an entirely consistent follow up. It picks up on many of the unanswered questions raised by the earlier book and I can only admire Mary Gentle for not only entirely avoiding anyting resembling an easy way out but most of all for getting such an uncompromising work past her editor and publisher.

If you enjoyed GW and are happy to leave that good feeling unchallenged, this book is not for you. If you want to know what was really behind all those hints of darkness, well, now you know what to do...

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing sequel to a very good book, 31 May 2000
By A Customer
My wife and I loved Golden Witchbreed; both of us have read it many times. So when I heard that a sequel was coming out a number of years ago, I made a special trip into London to buy her a copy for her birthday. I wish I hadn't bothered. This book does not build on the original work; it seems to seek to destroy it. I'm genuinely sorry I read it, since it took away a great deal of the joy I got from Golden Witchbreed.

In terms of enjoyment, I'd give it 1 star; since it is reasonably well-written, I've given some allowance for the fact that others may like dark books. But I'd recommend that anyone who liked the original work skip this one.
