4.0 out of 5 stars Dry, sharp wit wins you over, 21 Mar 2002

McDonald's irreverent mix of politics and sci-fi, with aliens against a backdrop of Northern Ireland is a sharp, unconventional mystrey/thriller. For those who would normally be put off by any hint of sci-fi or aliens, judging those books to be outside 'adult fiction', do not worry! The book is extremely well written and the Shian race and culture could have easily been transposed into that of any number of foreign nations. The alien culture adds a certain mysticism and a degree of the unknown to the plot which leaves the reader not only attempting to unravel the mystery of the prominent alien family but also the intricacies of their culture. The flawed hero of the story is Andy Gillespie an ex-paramilitary who whilst in prison studied the Shian culture and language through new technological processes, allowing him a mastery of the language normal methods would find impossible to duplicate. The usual theme of the outsider who rejects his past lifestyle as wrong, choosing to go on his own rather than picking a side is given a extra twist. Gillespie is not only left isolated by his severing of his ties in the conflict but also taking the middle ground between the new racial divide without being accepted by either side. A well crafted book that should interest those from Northern Ireland, Mystery/Thriller and Sci-Fi fans without upseting any of the groups (at least not too much). Well worth a gamble if you were unsure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ian McDonald goes from strength to strength, 7 Jan 2000
Known better for his gaudy prose style in the early 90's, Ian McDonald has trimmed some of the excess to produce consistently intelligent SF, 'Chaga' being a good example. 'Sacrifice of Fools' is, at heart, a crime/mystery story with the archetypical flawed lone hero, but McDonald infuses it with a SF-nal flavour all of its own. Clever, compulsive and sometimes cheeky, this novel bites. Highly recommended!
