About the Author

A. J. Cronin was born in Scotland in 1896. In 1914 he entered the Faculty of Medicine at Glasgow University, but his studies were interrupted by war service as a surgeon sub-lieutenant in the Navy. He graduated in 1919, and was later appointed Medical Inspector of Mines. He practised medicine in London until ill-health made him return to literature, and he wrote many hugely successful novels, including the famous Dr Finlay series. He was married with three sons, and died in 1981.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, probably the best book I've ever read!, 10 Sep 2001
By A Customer
That pretty much sums it up! Basically, it's a rags to riches story for a doctor who finds out the hard way that money cannot buy you happiness as well as exposing how flawed the medical system used to (and still it for that matter) is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly enthralling, 28 Sep 2006
By Cat-in-a-Book (Reading, England) - See all my reviews
This book is fantastic. It is extremely well written, but more than that it is captivatingly human, heart and soul. So real that you get swept along with the story from the very first page, the characters are flawed yet you love them for it. This book has everything: originality, character, humour, an interesting and accessible insight into the medical profession, love, heart-rending tragedy, but ultimately, hope. It's definitely going up on my top shelf with my other favourites! I really recommend it and am surprised so few people seem to have heard of it - everyone should read this book!
