Product Description

Product Description

University Challenge is one of the world's top quiz shows, enjoyed by millions, both participants and observers. But Discworld fans may feel that not many questions cover the real questions in Life, for example, Who or what could be seen as the inspiration for the near-tragic accident from which nanny Ogg is saved only be a special willow-reinforced hat made for her by Mr Vernissage of Slice? and give a plausible origin for Mrs Rosie Palm, proprietor of the famous House of Negotiable Affection in the Shades Each Faculty at the Unseen University has provided a set of questions, and answers are included for those who are not sure how the poisonous effects of quicksilver fumes are an occupational hazard of magic-users. The questions have been compiled by Mr David Langford, who knows quite as much - and arguably more - about the Discworld as its Creator, and Terry Pratchett has provided an Introduction.

About the Author

David Langford has been intimately linked with Discworld from the very start of the series. He is a critic as well as a writer, and as well as editing the Hugo Award-winning fanzine Ansible, amongst others, he has written a number of acclaimed SF novels, including THE LEAKY ESTABLISHMENT. Terry Pratchett is one of the world's most successful writers of fiction.

2.0 out of 5 stars Never really got into this, one for the anoraks methinks, 16 Oct 2000
By chenobble@yahoo.co.uk (Nottingham, UK) - See all my reviews
Its cleverly laid out and has some good questions but it is a little too anoraky for my tastes, it puts me in mind of a discworld convention where fans discuss what colour Corperal Carrots socks were. Not essential for a normal Pratchett fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars To pass the time till the next Discworld book, 7 Jan 2004

Beware - not all the questions in this book are from Discworld. It's all very well to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of everything there is to know about anything and everyone who ever trod the Disc, but unless you have a smidgeon of knowledge about, shall we call it Roundworld, you will fail to score a full 100%.

4.0 out of 5 stars Here is thyne starter for X points..., 8 Jan 2003
By A Customer
I think that it would be unfair to dub this a book for anoraks, just because it extends beyond the normal range of the discworld books. It is filled with little hints as to what may or has influenced TP in the past and produces threads of reasoning which one is inspired to tug on to see where they lead. There is also the slightly smug feeling to be enjoyed when you find that that an idea you had is confirmed!

I would recomend this to anyone who has an interest in how authors are influenced by other work (as suggested by the post of Reader of Invisble Runes at UU) or simply if you want to have fun with other TP fans. But remember, as Mr. Langford says - if you can get a full score without event trying then there's probably soemthing wrong and you need to get out more!
