Product Description

Product Description

When Edward Blake's wife India was kidnapped, he didn't trouble the police, just paid the twenty five grand ransom. But when she didn't show up and the kidnapper went to ground, he did call in the law, who figured that the whole thing was a set-up between India and some secret lover. But then, three months later, she turned up in a box, having been left to starve to death. The police became really interested, especially when they found out about the two and a half million pounds' worth of life insurance he'd taken out on her the year before. But with no proof they had to let Edward Blake go. The insurance company, however, is less than keen on paying up. Jill Sheridan, insurance assessor, needs someone to do some legwork, poking around in odd corners of Blake's life, and her thoughts turn to an old flame: Sam Turner. . .

5.0 out of 5 stars The book that should have won the prize, 22 Jan 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Walking with Ghosts (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book. I thought the other Sam Turner novels were good, but John Baker reaches for the stars with this one and gets very close to grasping some of them. I can't believe that the Daggers' judges read this book, because there is no doubt in my mind that if they had it would have been on the Gold Dagger shortlist. In fact it should have won the prize. Sam Turner is winning and getting closer to the killer of a politician's wife, but back at home he is fighting a losing battle with his dying wife. The novel is peopled by metaphorical ghosts and backlit by black humour. I have no hesitation in recommending this novel to anyone who is looking for a crime novel with more to offer than just a quick fix.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Best read of the year, 4 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Walking with Ghosts (Paperback)
Walking with Ghosts is the fourth Sam Turner novel and although the others were good, this is better still. Sam's case begins with a hint of political corruption and the discovery of the body of India Blake, the wife of a local politician. But the novel is layered with the idea of the ghost. Not in the creepy sense of something that goes bump in the night, but in the sense that we all have our ghosts, and they accompany us throughout our lives. But Baker also plays with the language in this novel in a way which has not been apparent in earlier books. For one strand of narative, which occurs frequently throughout the novel, he uses the second person. This is only seen infrequently in fiction, because it is difficult to control. But John Baker uses it flawlessly, and to great effect. My eyes were glued to the page.
