Product Description

Review
Two-volume classic defence by one hard left figure of another, deftly cut down into a single volume by a younger historian of the Labour Party, whose last book was a life of Gaitskell. Brivati has reduced its bulk by cutting most of the quoted speeches down by some two-thirds, and by judicious trimmings. Bevan's greatness as an orator still shines through, as does Foot's warm admiration for him. (Kirkus UK)

Product Description
When Aneurin Bevan died in 1960 he was acclaimed as an outstanding political figure, a parliamentary debater of the first order and a man of courage and personal magnetism. Yet he spent his life at the centre of a ferocious political controversy. This biography unravels the details of his life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Foot crosses the line, 3 Jul 2008
By Mr. S. Bailey - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"As a man, a speaker and a politician he always acted in a style completely individual to himself", is the phrase that friend and fellow Labour Party politician Michael Foot uses to describe the man once dubbed by Winston Churchill as 'a squalid nuisance' - Nye Bevan. Foot, the donkey-jacket wearing bibliophile with an elegant turn of phrase, could well have been speaking of himself. In this abridged edition of two volumes of biography Foot deploys the writing skills he refined as a journalist to extensively chronicle the man whose major achievement - the creation of the NHS - lives on to this day. Personally, I found it refreshing to see a British politician who can write prose free of cliché and caterwauling. However, as many critics have noted, there is a thin line between hagiography and biography which Foot unfortunately, occasionally, crosses. In sentences such as "Ernest Bevin might condemn him as an intellectual; Bevan could win the interchange by refusing to despise the intellect" you can sense Foot as an engaged participant, firmly on the side of Bevan, rather than as a detached observer explaining and examining what it says about the oft-confused pair with similar sounding names but contrasting political styles. Therefore, I believe that this intimate account of Bevan's origins, actions and philosophy should be read in conjunction with John Campbell's Nye Bevan (1997) because Campbell's account benefits from its emotional, critical and political distance from its subject matter.
