Product Description

When Leonard Pine's Uncle Chester dies Leonard is not expecting to inherit - after all, his Uncle never came to terms with the fact that his nephew was gay. But it seems that $100,000, a house and its contents have all been left to Leonard - along with a mysterious key which doesn't seem to fit anything in the house. But when Leonard and Hap move in to repair the house, they discover a crack house next door and, far worse, the skeleton of a child, hidden in a trunk underneath the floorboards. It seems that Uncle Chester's life was not exactly the way Leonard and Hap imagined it to be . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE ONE TO START WITH...., 10 July 2004
By J. Bilby "littlebibs" (Kingston, New Hampshire United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Mucho Mojo (Paperback)
I usually recommend people new to Joe R. Lansdale to read some
of his one of a kind short stories. Its the best way to appreciate his humor but this novel is such a great book it really doesn't matter. MUCHO MOJO was the first JOE R.LANSDALE I had come across back in the mid 90's and after reading this I knew I had found a writer
with so many sides to him I couldn't wait to find everything
he's written and to this day I still seek out his wonderful
writings, even back to the early 80's. His latest novels have
a maturity and skill you only get from living in a world he often writes about or hearing stories past down from family & friends - East, Texas USA. Mucho Mojo is a classic example of Joe' writing style and will leave you not only in
stitches but also chilled by his narratives-- always in awe of this fantastic
Texas writer. Hap and Leonard novels are ALL great novels and two of the most unusal characters to come out of the mystery
field in years. I do recommend you read all Hap and Leonard adventures, but, MUCHO MOJO is special to me, most
people that start reading Joe's books will get hooked!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Hap and Leonard, 2 July 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Mucho Mojo (Paperback)
This is the second, and for me, absolute best Hap and Leonard Story Joe R. Lansdale has written. While Savage Season was a little thin and tentative (albeit with a great cast) Mucho Mojo pipes the formula full of life. Mixing wry, dry humour (Hap and Leonard's throwaway dialogue is pricelessly real) and dead-pan horrific violence (in this case child murder) is no mean feat to pull off but Lansdale does it with style, grace and ease. The small town eccentricities and obsessions of East Texas are nicely portrayed in the hypocritical religious fanaticism of the First Primitive Baptist church or in the resilient character of old MeMaw. Particularly, Lansdale lends the amateur detective story a narrative logic in keeping with the laid-back setting. Things bowl along at their own pace with frequent breaks to reshingle the roof, make love to a woman, or eat a mess o' biscuits. This whole series is brilliantly compelling from beginning to end, but Mucho Mojo marks the high point for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, disturbing and wonderful, an original tall tale., 11 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Lansdale is a master story teller in so many genres. This was the first piece of work I read and it remains his best. The subject matter is dark and disturbing (as is usually the case with Lansdale), but he handles it brilliantly, with horror, suspense and humour used always to the right degree and in the right place.
Hap and Leonard are the perfect partnership, and when they are combined with a large legacy from Leonard's Uncle consisting of a house and 100,000 dollars, it is inevitable that there will be a child's skeleton and pornography buried in the foundations.
The unravelling of the story is handled deftly, with one eye on suspense and the other on entertainment. It certainly delivers on both counts.
My only concern? Is East Texas really filled with such madness as this? Suspend your disbelief and enjoy one of the best storytellers writing today, in any (or all) genres.
