Product Description

Product Description

Sookie Stackhouse is a cocktail waitress in a little bar in Bon Temps, a small town deep in Louisiana. She's funny and pretty and well-mannered, but she doesn't have that many close friends - mind you, that's not so surprising when you consider how few people can appreciate her abilities as a mind-reader. It's not a quality that has the guys beating down her door - well, unless they're vampires or werewolves or the like . . . but they're not just supernatural freaks, some of them are friends, even family . . . The box contains: Dead Until Dark, Living Dead in Dallas, Club Dead, Dead to the World, Dead as a Doornail, Definitely Dead, All Together Dead, From Dead to Worse.

About the Author

Charlaine Harris is the author of several NEW YORK TIMES bestselling supernatural and mystery series, as well as a number ofr standalone novels. She is married, with children, and lives in Arkansas.

4.0 out of 5 stars As good as but different to the TV series!, 3 Dec 2009
By Skargasm (East Sussex, UK) - See all my reviews

I have to admit I bought this elsewhere for a MAJOR bargain price! And I had kinda read the first couple of books before. But this time I was semi comparing it to the series which had been on the TV.

If you're looking at this, you pretty much know it's about Sookie Stackhouse, a young telepath who falls in love with a vampire. And that might be all that you know. But that's not all that's here. You have vampires - your bog standard scary ones - Bill, the studious first love of Sookie's life; Eric - the Viking Vampire that sneaks in under your radar, turns you on simply because he is so good at being bad, then sneakily makes you care; Pam - the Yummy Mummy looking vampire who has a total ruthless streak; and of course, the vampire that everyone recognises when they see him around, but who answers to the name of Bubba!!

But you get more than that. You get witches, Wiccans, werewolves, shifters, man-woman dynamics, politics, good old southern ways, infighting, inbreeding, royalty, fairies - these books have SO much in them, you don't get a chance to get bored. The men are absolutely gorgeous sounding - if they look that good in season 2, the series is going to have a HUGE female following, bigger than it has at the moment.

All told from Sookie's POV, these books start off slow and meandering, until you realise that you've read three of them on your day off because as soon as you finish one you just want to find out what happens next. And each book wraps some things up without being HEA - Sookie's life isn't simple and easy anymore, and the books don't try to pretend they are. There is some gore, much less sex than you might expect, complicated group dynamics, and a satisfying read. And it's nice that they have been repackaged so they match the TV series.

I read all eight of them in three days (but I did have to go to work one of those days, which took up a chunk of my time) as did my kids! And by the sixth book, I was ordering book 9 in hardback. They are well worth the money individually, but as a box-set you can't go wrong. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vampire Porn .. but who cares??!!, 2 Jan 2010
Ok.. so as a disappointed review says .. it's like Vampire Porn. And it is in parts. And the tv series actually has a lot more that isn't in the book. More characters, more storyline, more sex and more plot. The books are written from Sookie's perspective so that's going to happen. But.. I still love the books. There is a lot more too them than Mills & Boon books and they are well written.
So as for whether it will put you off the tv series. Well I guess that depends on your reasoning for liking the series in the first place. And if you like reading a broad range of writing styles and stories and like reading books that don't tax you mentally or create in depth characters then you will love these books.

I read a wide range of books and I love both books that are complex and take weeks to read properly and books that are just plain tasty and take you away from reality for awhile. This is the later. And as the books go on (I'm on no.3) they just get tastier and tastier. I can't wait to see what Alan Ball does with the rest!!!! Even if it is different.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give it a chance., 21 Jan 2010
By S. Howard (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I received this boxset for Christmas of my husband after we both LOVED the TV series.
The differences between the books and the TV series are very different, the books are souly from Sookie's perpective. Whereas the TV series isn't.
When I read the first book I wasn't too impressed, (I think I was comparing to too much to the TV series) but I decided to give the books a chance, as I had 7 more books to read.
Anyways, long story short, I'm on the 6th book and cannot put them down! I'm constantly blabbing to my husband the latest goings on in Bon Temp!
Yes, they aren't written particularly well, and it lacks continuity in places. But who cares??

Enjoy them, because I am! :)
