Product Description

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield is now Special Agent Cat Crawfield, woeking for the government to rid the world of the rogue undead. She's still using everything Bones, her sexy and dangerous ex, taught her, but when Cat is targeted for assassination, the only man who can help her is the vampire she left behind. Being around Bones awakens all her emotions, from the adrenaline rush of slaying vamps together, side by side, to the reckless passion that consumed them. But having a price on her head - wanted: dead or half-alive - means her survival depends on teaming up with Bones. And no matter how hard Cat tries to keep things professional between them, she'll find that desire lasts forever . . . and Bones won't let her get away again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vampire Slayer meets Vampire Assassin, 21 May 2008
By Helen Hancox "Auntie Helen" (Essex, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Cat Crawfield seems rather invincible. She's a half-vampire, half-human woman who works as a vampire slayer for the government. Four years have passed since the events in the previous book ('Halfway to the Grave') and she has been trying to move her life on after leaving her vampire lover, Crispin Randall, known as Bones although the cause of this name isn't explained in this book. However when Cat discovers that someone is trying to assassinate her she finds herself teaming up with Bones again to try to find out who's trying to kill her. Cat now has her own team of humans who help her in her vampire slaying and she has to overcome their prejudices against the undead as well as her own negative feelings towards Bones's former lovers.

There's plenty of action in this book - Cat's an invincible (almost) fighter although the fights have more realism than some as people do actually get injured. She's a lively and interesting character too although she does tend to leap into situations without properly reflecting on them some of the time. Cat's vampire-hating mother has a brief appearance in this book which is amusing but it's mostly about vampire politics, fights and Cat and Bones's relationship, as well as Cat's thirst for vengeance against her father.

Some of the dialogue for Bones felt a little awkward - he used English slang but sometimes it didn't quite sound authentic to these English ears. He was also slightly nebulous as a character - I didn't feel I really got to know him in the same way that I learned about the other characters. This issue was perhaps addressed in the previous book in the series, which I haven't read, but it didn't really detract from this story too much.

However I loved this book, felt it was well-paced and interesting with some good characters and with well-thought-out vampire lore underpinning the events. It has inspired me to pick up the first in the series and I will certainly look forward to the next offering from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Night Huntress, Book Two, 7 Aug 2009
By Detra Fitch (USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
When her pathology reports told Don that Catherine "Cat" Crawford was not totally human, he blackmailed her to be the leader of his branch in the Homeland Security. Cat is a hybrid of human and vampire. Her team is affectionately known as the "Death Squad from Hell". She had previously left her lover and mentor, Bones, as an act of mercy, when she disappeared from Licking Falls, Ohio, and left her old life behind. Cat's team hunts down and kills creatures of the night. With every vampire she exterminates, Cat hopes it was her biological father.

As the story opens, Cat is after an old and powerful vampire called Liam Flannery. She is only a second away from twisting her silver knife and ending his existence when she learns he is Bones's sire. To repay Bones, Cat let the vampire escape. However, Flannery is a collector of rare things and he now wants to collect HER. Add to this, someone has put a bounty on her head and every super natural being is after the Red Reaper, her nickname among the supes.

When Cat least expects it, Bones reappears in her life. Bones has been searching for Cat ever since the night she disappeared. They have unfinished business to attend to. Knowing of the bounty and Flannery's infatuation with Cat, Bones is determined to stick around whether Cat likes it or not. One thing is for sure, Cat's team members do not like it one bit. They tolerated her being half vampire and it took awhile for them to believe she would not succumb and become totally vampire. Cat earned the respect of everyone on her team. But they wanted nothing to do with Bones, nor for Cat to have anything to do with him. Too bad, because Cat and Bones are still attracted to each other and are seriously considering continuing where they left off.

***** This is the second book in the Night Huntress series. It picks up pretty much where the last left off. The author let readers watch as Cat went from amateur to pro in her Night Huntress skills. Doing so was a stroke of genius, in my opinion. I watched a normal girl slowly become a deadly assassin, making the character very realistic to me. I came to thoroughly understand Cat and to care for her. The other characters are just as well developed. Filled with almost non-stop action, a romance, and more than a few new twists, this story will sky rocket straight to the best seller lists! Jeaniene Frost has found her niche! *****

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 26 May 2009
By Shotts (Newcastle) - See all my reviews
I had really high hopes for this book and was disappointed, yes the story was fast paced with lots of twists and turns, there was also lots of character development with the likes of Tate etc, but I felt, like with so many books of the genre, most notibly the Rachel Morgan series, I don't like Cat's character I think she's a pain in the backside who doesn't appear to pocess any rational thoughts, Bones has migrated into the Dick Van Dyke school of English which at times was cringeable.

I also felt with this book that the author went too far with the main love senario which in fact spoilt it for me as it wasn't necessary. I agree that this book needed to be written and the premise was good, but again with many of these books is it really a series?? Maybe I'm just bored with these Buffy books now??
