Product Description

Jonathan Wright, SFX
"A vividly convincing picture of a past world... the prophecy link gives the narrative a forward momentum remarkable in a book that spans four centuries. This is a character based novel that leaves you wanting to spend more time with its major players. Epic historical fiction laced with a science fiction premise." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

"This is Baxter at his best, writing his historical fiction with an SF sensibility, and proving that the genres are closer in style and creative demands than many readers realise." (Jon Courtenay Grimwood THE GUARDIAN )

"A hugely entertaining and exquisitely researched new departure." (BBC FOCUS )

"It's an effective series of Roman vignettes, with a portrait of Claudius that's far enough from the 'I Claudius' archetype to be interesting. " (STARBURST )

5.0 out of 5 stars A real page-turner, 28 April 2007
By C. Waite (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I couldn't put this book down from the very first page - Stephen Baxter has combined his usual powerful imagination and vivid writing with some fascinating historical research to create a really memorable and thought-provoking novel.

If you're interested in British history, the Roman empire, or the roots of modern religion then you'll love this. Actually that makes this sound a bit dry and it isn't - it's full of superb characters, action and adventure and an epic mystery spanning centuries. It also makes you think again about the nature of civilisation, empire, and nationhood.

I couldn't wait to read the next book after I finished this - Baxter has held back from revealing too much at this stage but this just makes me want more! I sense and hope that that there is one of Baxter's trademark mind-expanding conclusions coming up a few books down the line. I can't wait!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rome's Changing Fortunes, 15 Sep 2006
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)

This is a book about the trials and tribulations of the Roman Empire. It tells the story of the Empire and it's ever expanding borders as each subsequent Emperor vows to bring even more land and conquered people under the yoke of Rome. Who can stand against the mightiest fighting force that the world has ever seen, the legions of Rome.

One of the far outpost of the Empire is Britain, a cold, damp island, where there is continual unrest and the legions have to be on there guard at all times. In one of the smoky, dark buildings the British call home, a woman is in the throes of childbirth. As the pain becomes worse she screams out some Latin words. The words are in a language the woman has never heard before, never mind spoken.

The words are scribbled down and it is only later it becomes clear that the woman has spoken a prophecy, a prophecy that foretells the death of an Emperor. A death that could change the fate of the Roman Empire and all of the future up until the present day . . .

The author has woven a wonderful tale of war and hate and the fortunes of Rome as they wax and then begin to wane. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, give me anything with Rome and the legions and I am in my element.
