3.0 out of 5 stars The Sword of Angels, 11 May 2006
By David Nelson "Tool" (Newborough,Vic Aust) - See all my reviews
The concluding volume in this epic series is not quite the triumph I was expecting.
For starters, it was just too long. A lot of scenes were drawn out for not much gain; i.e Lukien's trek for the sword itself, while interesting, I felt was bogged down; the whole library issue and Thorin and Khaldris's need for Gilwyn and the catalogue machine eventuated to nill. Lots of others, but there were some truly brilliant pieces, such as the whole Salina, Aztar, Baralossus events which were highlights, as were the Jazana, Thorin, Asher and Corvalos Chane parts.
The plots and the character's motives were swapped around a bit during the book and granted, it was a brave attempt by the author to try something different. A lot of the cast, big or small, don't have happy endings, but the big let down for me was the final showdown b/n the Sword and the Armour. It lasted maybe 2 pages if that, and the capitulation of the loser was rather weak.
Saying all that, the big, Big, BIG let down with this book was the number of errors in spelling, grammar and all the rest. I know it's impossible to get it perfectly right with a book this big, but the sheer number of mistakes was unprecedented in my 30 year reading experience. There were a least 1 to 2 hundred of these glaring errors throughout the book and this is absolutely unforgivable in this day and age. The Devil's Armour had a few, but nothing compared to this. It's like he wrote the first draft, spell checked it, and released it as is.
It will decide if I ever read another book by this author, especially fork out a lot of money for it.
So in the end, it should have been a classic, still could be if future edition's are cleaned up, but the reality is, it's a wasted opportunity.
Damn shame I say.
