The Lies of Locke Lamora is a fantastic novel. It reads like a Summer movie blockbuster - very very showy with something pretty spectacular in every scene, but no bad thing for that. TLoLL is a pretty relentless ride and one which you feel exhilirated to have taken. Red Seas, sadly, is not quite in the same vein. A more considered pace would never kill this tale, but I believe the book takes its turn for the worse mid-way, when the main protagonists hit the high seas. It seems to me that Scott Lynch is as uncomfortable with pirates as Locke and Jean. It's not quite "AHAR! Avast!" and "shiver me timbers", but it's just not very convincing.

I don't want to be unkind to Lynch as TLoLL is the first fantasy novel I truly enjoyed. He drew some good characters and a superbly paced plot in that book. Here, Red Seas seems like a stretch, and the introduction of the hitherto unacknowledged guiding principles of Locke's religion seem rather shoe-horned in, rather like the existential theories (poorly) shoe-horned into the Matrix sequels. Perhaps later novels will build on those principles further, but I felt that that two jarring dimensions - the pirates and the religion - was one too many to fully forgive.

Red Seas is OK, but it doesn't live up to the huge expectation I had following Lies of Locke Lamora.

I just finished reading this book at 1 o'clock this morning. I couldn't put it down. It's an amazing sequel to The Lies of Locke Lamora, I actually found it more gripping than the original.

I felt more connected to the characters in this novel than I did in the original, and actually found myself having physical responses to the book (a first for me I don't usually get that involved) I found myself sitting up in shock more than once.

One complaint I have is that the story regarding Ezri I saw coming from a long way off and I was dissapointed with the way it ended. It was too obvious.

Overall however a fantastic novel! I highly recommend it as easily the best fantasy book I've read in the last few years.

I have to say that i agree with Mr Stevens review here. I really enjoyed 'Lies of Locke Lamora', it was really well thought out, elegent and exciting - pretty much everything that this is not. The author uses lazy visual tricks 'if you could hang a thousand yards above the city..' repeatedly, his plot, which threatens to be as complex and intricate at the start of the novel, gets badly confused and lurches to a contrived and unconvincing and very frustrating end. It feels a little like Lynch spend the time after the first book reading about Pirates and Ships and was determined to ram in his new hobby into the book. All in all its a disappointing second novel from a very promising novelist. If you are expecting the same sparkle of 'Lies of Locke Lamora' you may well be dissapointed. I hope the last book of the Gentlemen Bastard series is better, Lynch is full of talent, it just does not show in this book.
