Product Description

Product Description

Lin Carter introduces readers to Tolkien's epic trilogy then takes them on a scholarly yet populist journey through the massive web of myths and legends that Tolkien drew on for both imagery and themes during his life's work. Carter's book places Tolkien's trilogy in the context of world mythology and legend and is a tribute to Tolkiens power of assimilation and original vision. It is the ideal introduction to the background of the LORD OF THE RINGS for the legions of new fans.

About the Author

If JRR Tolkien was the single author most responsible for the existence of Fantasy as a modern publishing genre then the single editor and critic with the same claim was Lin Carter. His tireless advocacy of both modern fantasy writers and their historical forbears as the first editor on the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series was hugely influential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, highly recommended., 7 Aug 2006

(REAL NAME)
I'm halfway through this book, and I'd strongly recommend it to anyone interested in a learned, intelligent, and brilliantly readable exploration of Tolkien's inspirations for The Lord of the Rings. It's also a fascinating look at how LOTR was appreciated in 1969 and the type of questions it apparently raised back then.

Much of the biographical information on Tolkien has been done better since the original publication, but the book contains some interesting information unlikely to be found elsewhere, simply because this book was written in Tolkien's lifetime and Carter was able to draw from the impressions of people who had met him (notably a friend who had interviewed him for a magazine). One snippet of information which interested me, is that Tolkien was extremely interested in current affairs, and regularly read three newspapers. It's an interesting counterpoint to the idea that Tolkien was lost in a world of his own and oblivious of the real world - an image subtly suggested in most books and articles written since the films came out.
