3.0 out of 5 stars Two novellas, one better than the other..., 20 April 2003
By dogbarkssome (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Two novellas published back to back, this is the third mass market pairing reprinted by Gollancz, and handy for those of us who missed the original limited editions from PS Publishing.

The 'A' side of the pairing is Peter F Hamilton's 'Watching Trees Grow, an inventive story that uses the form of the whodunnit murder mystery, but set over 200 odd years of an alternate history where society is still based around the Roman Empire. The level of progress over such a relatively short period of time is pretty unlikely, but this is an engrossing novella, as it packs such an epic scope in its fairly brief length. The joy comes less from unravelling the murder mystery as it does from experiencing Hamilton's future society.

Very much the 'B' side is Ian McDonalds 'Tendeleo's Story', which seems to take forever to get moving. This also suffers from being simply another take on the events of his novel Chaga, and while that novel was excellent the first time round there's really not enough new here to recommend it to readers who've already read that novel.

So, two novellas - one good, one not so good - but overall this is still well worth checking out...

5.0 out of 5 stars Watching Trees Grow, 18 Oct 2007

A must for Peter F Hamilton fans. He is my favourite contemporary SF author, and I rate this novella as the best work he has done. Mixing crime story and alternative history seemlessly if you liked any of his previous work you will love this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tendeleo's Story, 10 Jul 2007
By Ed (Somerset, England) - See all my reviews
I don't actually agree with the previous review. I really liked Tendeleo's story and got into it well. Watching trees grow, on the other hand, i couldn't get into as well ...I found myself getting bored with it quite quickly. I think this was probably because the prose in Watching trees grow was a little too complex for the age i was when i read it. Mcdonald's story on the other hand was more my age group Don't get me wrong i'm not saying TS doesnt have complex prose its just easier to read and altogether a great story :)
