Product Description

Product Description

Baron Eric von Rothbert is a powerful sorcerer who devotes his life to capturing women who inspire his wrath and transforming them into swans. Over the flock he sets his daughter Odile, gifted in magic, but still spurned by her father. Odette, noblest of the Baron's enchanted flock, wrests from their captor a promise which could lead to fredom for all the swan-maidens, but the Baron is determined to use all his magical cunning to avoid honouring that promise. Prince Siegfried comes upon the swan-maidens as day dissolves into dusk -- and the game takes on a new twist, for Siegfried is a selfish hedonist and dissolute womaniser . . .

2.0 out of 5 stars A great read, 17 Jun 2002
By Katie (England) - See all my reviews
This book is fantastic. A whole new twist put into a familiar story makes it seem real but so very new and different. And so much better than the original myths of the swan-women, with more plausible characters and storyline. At various times it brough tears to my eyes at the emotional happenings. characters were developed throughout the books, and learnt, or didnt learn as the case may be, from their pasts. An unexpected ending finishes the book magnificently. In my opinion it doesnt match up to the valdemar books, but considered on its own it is a wonderful read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but lacks depth, 28 Jul 1999
By A Customer
I found this book a rather interesting variation of the original Swan Lake, but the writing lacks depth, and it is hard to be properly "immersed" in it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for ballet lovers and fantasy readers!, 9 Jul 1999
By A Customer
I just finished reading a great book. It is "THE BLACK SWAN" by Mercedes Lackey. It is fantasy about the story of Swan Lake. She fleshes out the ballet story and makes it into a real fairy tale. I could see parts of the ballet as I read the story. I also was mesmerized and glued to my seat even though I basically knew the end. For ballet lovers and fantasy readers this is a must!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to her usual standard.

1.0 out of 5 stars not in her normal style, disappointing
Black Swan is a retelling of Swan Lake. This is the only Mercedes Lackey book that I've not reread at least 3 or 4 times, I couldn't even finish it. Read more
