Product Description
Synopsis
A biography of footballer Danny Blanchflower. Born in Belfast and educated at St. Andrews, Blanchflower began his career at Barnsley in 1949, soon finding himself at odds with the management, gaining an image as a rebel. In 1951, he moved to Aston Villa, where his elegant style was out of place with Villa's physical approach. When Arsenal pulled out of a proposed #40,000 transfer, it looked as though Blanchflower's career might be over, but things fell into place when he joined Spurs. He was twice Footballer of the Year; he helped Spurs win the double in 1961, the FA Cup again the year after, and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1963, the first European victory by an English club.

About the Author
Beautifully illustrated, with rare archive material, the book will be a pastiche of a 1950s football annual.
Aimed at the Christmas gift/nostalgia market (for the older, more discerning fan).
Having written critically acclaimed biographies of Bill Shankly, Danny Blanchflower, Alf Ramsey and a recent history of the England team, Dave Bowler’s contacts in the world of football veterans are second to none: features interviews with Bobby Robson, Don Howe, Malcolm Allison and Walter Winterbottom among others.
There have been best-selling accounts of the lives of contemporary journeymen footballers (Gary Nelson, Steve Claridge, Tony Cascarino) – this will be the first from another era.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring insight to an inspiring sportsman, 14 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Unlike biographies of other 'characters' in football, this book looks into the life of not only a great footballer, but a true sportman and gentleman. Having read George Best's bio, where you only end up feeling pity and frustration Bowler's biography of Danny Blanchflower is an inspiration. This book is not just for fans of Spurs or Northern Ireland, or not even football, but should be given to every child to show them how our former heros managed to live in comparison to the spoilt characters in the game today.

4.0 out of 5 stars A truely great footballer who would not be scilenced., 16 Feb 1999
By A Customer
This book provides a comprehensive account of the life of Danny Blanchflower, Captain of the 'Spurs Double Winning side of 1961. Whilst the style of the prose might not be to everyone's liking, it is the man in question who hold the interest. The book shows Blanchflower to be one of the forgotten heros of the game, both domestically and internationally.
