This is the first in a two-volume epic from Ian Watson concerning the clash between human colonists and alient serpents on the planet Kaleva. While science fiction at heart 'Lucky's Harvest' has all the trappings of fantasy, with a psuedo-medieval society where 'magic' of a sort works. The novel is thematically concerned with the power of stories, with characters often compelled to follow out dramatic imperatives, and a spaceship that literally listens to stories.

'Dune' is a fair comparison, with this being a very wide-ranging book exploring a large cast and a very intricate plot. In fact if there is a criticism it's that the plot here may be too involved, with characters crossing each others paths through a series of complex motions with no clear overarching narrative to the novel. In parts 'Lucky's Harvest' contains some fantastic moments, but as a whole it's too fractured and it's cast is too large and unweildy for the reader to really connect emotionally with the characters, though to be fair this is only the first half of a longer whole. An impressive but slightly cold work, this is nevertheless recommended for those who enjoy SF/fantasy world-building.
