4.0 out of 5 stars Sublime Scenes of Suburbs, 26 May 2004
By A Customer
I disagree vehemently that this novel is "overlong". The imagery from bourgeois life in 1960s USA ended too soon for me; this is the only way I can concur with the previous comment-the novel runs out of steam before the ending. The curiosity (I won't say suspense visavis Rosamond Smith) from foreshadowing kept me reading intently, though. Perhaps I enjoyed the "filler" uniquely because I lived it as a child of 1960s USA suburbia. I can only describe the experience of reading Oates' depiction of this life as rapturous. It's fantastic that the book is rife with this.

2.0 out of 5 stars oh god, 1 Oct 2000

hmmm.. 'overlong'- is the word to describe this book, it could have been such an achievement if all the padding was removed, at times it was magnificent, truely it was, and sometimes i found myself astonished at the word play and the story had me gripped but the plot sadly never goes anywhere; this book never finishes, where was the perpetuation of that first 'shocking' line? nowhere. I would recommend this book only if you have nothing else to read.
