5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 22 Dec 2007
In my opinion I think this is Ayckbourn's finest play. Three acts in three kitchens on three Christmas Eves by three couples of different classes, each with a story to tell. A great play, ingeniously written, with a catchy title that sticks in the mind and you find yourself repeating it. If you haven't seen it you must see it and if you are a Amdram society that hasn't performed it you must perform it, it will probably fill the hall. And if you love to laugh, have a look at another hillarious comedy called Lust In The Dust by New Theatre Publications.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Comedy, 26 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Absurd Person Singular is a comedy by Alan Ayckbourn; it portrays his typical style, mainly in the way it is built up. It consists of three acts depicting three Christmas parties by three different couples who are present at all events and are the only ones in attendance each time. Furthermore, the festivities take place each Christmas for three consecutive years.

In the first act we are shown the before-party-tidy-up-syndrome which no doubt everybody has had! Many of the occurrences reflect amusing situations with which we are familiar. There are many funny lines throughout the play but sometimes one has to mull over their significance! The second act has many humorous elements of which I will mention none... read and you will find out. However, there are a few supposedly funny parts which tend to be disappointing. I found that the final act had a weak and unsatisfactory ending.

The personal relationships of the three couples, the interaction between them and their social hierarchy absurdness is all most entertaining. Another amusing feature is Jane who is so irritating and simple-minded that we tend to want more and more of her presence. This is similar, but not as well done, to Miss Clack's narrative in The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins.

Weighing up the pros and cons one finds that it is a good play, but not to be compared with Shakespeare! I think that most people will like this light comedy. Concluding, I rate it 4 out of 5.
