Product Description

Synopsis

The wisdom and humanity of the great Culpeper are to be found in every page of this beautifully illustrated, classic work. Enjoy his caustic comments and colourful descriptions. But also read the contemporary assessment of his herbs by David Potterton, one of Britain's leading herbal practitioners. So many of Culpeper's views are still accepted by modern medicine that it offers some thought-provoking comparisons. Here is plant lore, traditional herbal wisdom and current herbal practice in a superbly presented, classic volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone interested in herbal remidies, 10 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Beautifully illustrated and well layed out, I have found this book useful, both as a gardener and an herbalist. Modern uses as well as Culpepers 16th century work are particularly usful for those interested in the history and progression of herbalism.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice reference book, 24 April 2004
By A Customer
Good illustrations and well referenced. However, not exactly what I wasexpecting - there was far less information in it than I thought therewould be, about half a page per herb, including illustration. Nevertheless, a nice book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Distillation of Culpeper, 14 Jun 2008
By SARAH MCCARTNEY (London, England, UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As the editor says, this is the essence of Culpeper's Complete Herbal and English Physician from 1649. It is illustrated in colour so you can recognise the herbs when you see them growing wild. In Culpeper's time that would have been common knowledge. It is also written in 20th Century English so it's a good deal simpler to understand than the original. Culpeper was strongly influenced by the astrological significance of herbalism, so David Potterton, a recognised expert himself, has included that data as well as the medicinal information and modern uses for each herb.
It's a great book for beginner herbalists: informative, helpful and wise. It's just not exactly Culpeper.
