3.0 out of 5 stars Bob's guide to Shadowmancer, 29 Aug 2004
By Robert Dixon (West Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
I am an avid reader of any book in the sci-fi, horror or fantasy genre. I took Shadowmancer from my local library to read during a holiday. The feeling is that you either love or hate the book. It does have a tendancy to lean on religious aspects, but as it is written by a man of the cloth (for whom that is the only way of life he knows) we should be forgiving. I am not a religious man and I read this book from cover to cover and enjoyed it. You can abide the overly heavy religious tone and enjoy the plot for what it is, the usual good versus evil battle. Sure it's not Harry Potter, or The Dark Tower, but for a quiet week, it filled the time up admirably. Not bad.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 28 April 2004
By A Customer
I began reading this book very predisposed to like it, but found itterribly disappointing. Having heard good reviews and comparisons to JKRowling and Philip Pullman, I plugged on til the end, hoping that it wouldget better, but it never did. While I could see that some children mightfind the story exciting because of the constant appearance of smugglers, trap doors, hidden tunnels and sliding wall panels, I can't see why thisbook could cross over into the adult market. I found the language stiltedand cliche-ridden and the Biblical allegories unimaginative andunilluminatingly obvious. It seemed like Taylor was trying to write aChristian book that would appeal to fantasy readers and Tolkien fans, butthe brazen allegory would have Tolkien turning in his grave. It startsrather obscurely, with lots of occultic references, and ends like aPentacostal revival meeting, but with none of its power because of theclumsy writing. Although the two child characters through the story aresupposed to grow into good Christians (sorry, followers of Riathamus),their development is forced. Here's an example of a key point in thedevelopment of Kate, a main character who has been completelyone-dimensional up to this point (and remains so, I think.):
"She had lost all the trust she had in [her father], in fact in everyone.Life with her father had never been easy. It was his drinking that hadalways been the problem. He would fly into a rage at the slightest thing, shout and scream and then break down in tears. For many years she hadthought it was her fault, that in some way she was responsible. Kate couldnever live up to his expectations, she could never be a child, never playgames. Her lot in life was to cook and clean, to sew and mend. These werehis demands. He wanted her to be a mother, a servant, but never adaughter. Tonight she had leant that he had been living a double life, andrealized that her father had been slowly poisoned by the death of hermother, the guilt, the pain, and now the deception. 'It's not my fault,it's not my fault,' she kept repeating under her breath as she thought ofher father and of how he had betrayed her."
Taylor is economical with his character development; he gets it over inone paragraph. The monsters/demons/scary things were also equallyunconvincing. Tolkien creates some great monsters, Taylor never even givesthem good descriptions or personalities, just piggybacks on what we knowof other beasties from other fantasy stories. And evil is equallyunconvincing and entirely unattractive. If someone wanted to recommendobviously Christian allegorical books to their kids, there are books outthere that are better written. While heavily borrowing from the Narniabooks, John White's Anthropos books ('The Tower of Geburah', 'The IronSceptre', etc ) are at least very readable, and the children's adventuresgradually lead to their inner development. And other, not overtlyChristian books can get kids thinking without resorting to churchylanguage and religious cliches, just changing names and adding bogeymen.
I admire Taylor's attempt to make a good, scary story, and he knows whichprops will appeal to readers, but I think he needs to keep writing andlearn to flesh out his characters and create a more subtle and convincingmanifestations of both good and evil. I hope he keeps at it.
