Product Description

From the Back Cover
‘I was watching a lot of TV, eating a lot of processed food. It was the 1970s. Heaven . . . At the age of ten, for want of anything more meaningful to do, I put my arm above my head and kept it there. Now, thirty years on, I'm so full of meaning it's killing me.’
My Arm is the story of an empty gesture. It's the testimonial of a man who has lived by the courage of his lack of conviction since 1974. In that process he's become a celebrated medical specimen and an icon of the New York art scene. The story is told through a live performance, digital film and the animation of everyday objects supplied by the audience before each performance. Above all, My Arm is an extraordinary piece of theatre about modern art, bloody-mindedness and how the things we do when we're ten stick with us for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tim Crouch, genius playwright, 18 Aug 2005
By E. PARRY (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I saw the play My Arm at the Traverse in 2003. It stood out as one of the best productions at that year's fringe and one of the most memorable plays I've ever seen. Tim Crouch tells a story of a boy who decides one day to put his arm in the air and keep it there, forever. Of course, there's a lot more to the story than that, and it raises issues about family, childhood, and the nature of art. I bought the text of this play at the Traverse theatre in Edinburgh after seeing Crouch's new play, An Oak Tree. He has a knack for making each performance unique through the way the story is told. In An Oak Tree the second actor is a different person every night, someone who has neither seen nor read a word of the play. In My Arm, the story is told through every day objects offered up from the audience before the show starts; the father might be a matchbox, the brother, Anthony, could be a pack of chewing gum. There's also use of video camera feed and film projection. It's hard to convey the effect this all has, and as with any play, I recommend seeing this in performance where possible. However, the text is fascinating on its own as well, and it's the kind of play that will have you wanting to read back over it after you've seen it. Tim Crouch is an amazing writer who can infuse a single sentence with so much meaning; for a first play this is really something. The book also contains two short plays for children which are well worth reading.
