Product Description

Product Description

From the author of "The New York Trilogy", "Moon Palace" and "The Book of Illusions", comes a highly personal collection of essays, prefaces and occasional pieces written for magazines and newspapers. Ranging in subject from Walter Raleigh to Kafka; Hawthorne to high-wire artist Philippe Petit; conceptual artist Sophie Calle to his own typewriter; and The World Trade Center catastrophe to his beloved New York City itself, Auster displays his customary flair, wit and insight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insights into a great writer's life and mind, 5 Jun 2005
By Mr. A. J. Threadgould "calvino307" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Paul Auster writes beguiling, complex and stylish novels. This collection shows that he is also a fine writer of non-fiction. The Invention of Solitude is a dark examination of Auster's relationship with his father and his son. Literary allusions and very honest admissions make his work essential reading. The Art of Hunger provides insights into his personality and his early writing career. Shorter pieces collect reviews, editor's introductions and essays on events such as 911, and all are compelling and wonderfully addictive.

A must read for anyone serious about reading, and the power of books, words and stories.
