3.0 out of 5 stars Brief and with unanswered questions, 27 Dec 2006
When Ramon discovers the body of a beautiful young girl in a field he is so moved he takes it upon himself to make sure the body is properly laid to rest. However, this makes the other residents of Loma Grande, a small Mexican village, believe that she was "his girl". Rumours gather pace until Ramon is encouraged to avenge her death by any means necessary.

This novel was originally written in Spanish and has been translated into English, and sometimes this shows in the structure of a sentence and in a few spelling and grammar mistakes. At just 160 pages it is not a book that is going to take forever to get through, but it would have been nice to have a bit more length and some questions answered (the questions will become apparent when you read it).

The whole novel is not very descriptive, and you can see why some of Arriaga's best works have been screen-plays, where locations and characters can be realised with a lot less imagination. This isn't to say it is not a good read, it just helps if you have some knowledge of the sort of scenery you get in Mexico.

The story is not so much about the death of a girl and the quest to avenge her, but more about how rumours can spread so fast in a small community that the line between fact and fiction is incredibly blurry. The truth can easily get buried by what people want to believe. If there is a moral to the story it is not to let rumours get so out of hand that you end up becoming a different person.

You will want to find out what happens in the end but as I said before, not all your questions will be answered, and some of these questions are important (they were to me anyway).
