5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, tragic and haunting, 13 Mar 2006
This is one of those books that is going to stay with you forever after you put it down. The characters are so expertly drawn and the language so poetic you can't help but be moved by this tale of love and loss set in eighties Scotland. Please read this, you won't be disappointed. I'm now going to hunt down everything else Mr Greig has written!

5.0 out of 5 stars Obsession- from Eyemouth to the Old Man, 27 Nov 2005
By Hamish (Galashiels, Scotland) - See all my reviews
A fabulous book with a disturbing plot revolving around an oil engineer and his artist girlfriend portrayed via a series of flashbacks across the scarred landscape of eighties Thatcherism. Andrew Greig harnesses the descriptive and playful nature of the Scots tongue to describe moving incidents involving love, climbing, and the search for inspiration amongst friends amid the torturous political climate. A great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Didn't want it to end, 16 Jan 2007
By Kate (Edinburgh, UK) - See all my reviews
This book was recommended to me and I have to say it didn't really grab this home-comfort loving urbanite, with the watercolour cover and blurb about climbing! But you know what they say about not judging books... This turned out to be one of those books where, though I was dying to get to the end and find out what happened, once it was finished I was genuinely disappointed and wished I could keep on reading. I'm still thinking about the characters weeks later. Set against a background of Scotland's most striking scenery, this book is no fluffy romance but is full of real, raw emotion. The characters - wild, passionate Kim, calm, loving Jimmy, tough Lindsay and taciturn, rebellious Graeme, as well as others - are flawed, insecure, damaged by destructive relationships, yet full of humanity and passion, putting both their hearts and their lives on the line. It's intense, romantic and moving, and inspired me to get hold of 3 more of AG's books - if they're anything like this I can't wait to get started!
