5.0 out of 5 stars This novel about one woman's life may be Maurice Gee's best., 6 Nov 2001
By A Customer
If you've read Maurice Gee's novel "Hostel Girl", you'll remember the lively Ailsa, who was prepared to speak out. Maurice Gee liked the brave teenager so much that he has re-named her Ellie, and written the story of her adult life. This saga takes her through everything from the hippy communes of Nelson in the 1960s to the art world of 1990s Wellington. Along the way she has a range of relationships, including living with an infuriating novelist, who is a very funny spoof of Gee himself. The writing is first-class and the characters - especially the women - are brilliantly drawn. Ellie's quest for happiness is a good picture of New Zealand life in the second half of the 20th Century, and is Maurice Gee's best book so far.
