Product Description

Product Description

Music master to Frederick the Great, Quantz was one of the great flute virtuosos of all time. He was also a thorough musician, a fine teacher and an excellent writer. This classic book is ostensibly a flute method, but it goes far beyond that, presenting a complete and detailed picture of musical taste and performance practice in the 18th century. Of special significance is a table relating various tempos to the speed of the pulse, helping modern musicians to solve the difficult question of authentic performance tempos of Baroque music. This reissued edition includes all Quantz's music examples together with an introduction and explanatory notes by the translator, Edward R. Reilly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for any serious musician., 13 April 2001
By A Customer
This translation includes all of the original text of 1752 plus more source information and annotations. I found the markers to other relevant pages throughout the book most helpful in using it for reference. The book is excellent on all aspects of musicianship, not just on 'Playing the flute'. General sections give his thoughts on practice, dedication to music, performance, style, accompanists, and judging musicians- which in my opinion are all applicable to today's music scene. Even though flute playing methods were slightly different to those of today, Quantz gives relevant instruction on embouchure, hand position and articulation. Historical facts about the flute and his opinions are given. He paints a very factual picture with colourful insights. In this book I find the most reliable instruction on authentic playing of, for example, ornaments in the Baroque style, to be found. Other instructions given on Baroque playing are about playing certain movements, and general styles of that period. Quantz also offers suggestions on writing cadenzas, applicable to all kinds of music. On Playing the Flute is written in quite a personal way, so it feels as though you are getting a lesson from Quantz himself. Adding to the explanations of his instruction are musical extracts and reproductions of original engravings. The contents of his essay is full of little gems of knowledge not to be found anywhere else. This versatile book is important to us as a historical document, as well as being one of the earliest instructions on playing the flute.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for all flute players, 20 April 2003
I purchased this book for my son who is a musician at the Royal Welsh College of Music. He is a Post Graduate finishing his fifth year, and this book he recommends to all flute players. It has an immense amount of information in it, and has seen him through two degrees. A must for any flautist.
