Product Description

Synopsis

Golding's best-known novel is the story of a group of boys who, after a plane crash, set up a fragile community on a previously uninhabited island. As memories of home recede and the blood from frenzied pig-hunts arouses them, the boys' childish fear turns into something deeper and more primitive.

2.0 out of 5 stars Why is this book so famous?, 6 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Considering that this is such a well known book, I was massively disappointed.

The dialogue is dreadfully simplistic and badly written. The story, despite having a fairly sound plot is incoherent in places - Golding often preferring to rely on the awful dialogue to flesh out what would have been better described.

The story also failed to chart the morale demise of the characters properly - preferring instead to get it out of the way quickly...rather than a gradual morale degeneration.

It is a wholly pompous and uninspiring affair. I would not recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent novel for study, 4 Nov 1999
By A Customer
I am a student at St Philip Howard Catholic High School in Barnham, West Sussex, England and I am studying Lord Of The Flies as one of my GCSE literature texts. It is a really enjoyable book to read and it is very informative of how these chilren would have acted in this sought of circumstance. Don't you think so? I have to write many tasks about it, however I do not believe this to be a problem because it is a book I enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars More a psychological study than a novel, 19 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This book is a fascinating study of man's capability for brutality and violence. As it was written shortly after WW2, it is a reflection fo the discovery of the concentration camps in Germany. As the book progresses, the changes in the central characters are fascinating to observe. Golding's subtle comparisons of Simon to Christ are well hidden but well observed, and his observations of the habits of social order are terrifyingly accurate. Read it several times to appreciate it properly.
