4.0 out of 5 stars A crackin' good read, 29 Nov 2002
Focusing on the author's travels around Russia in the early 1990s, this book is a clever combination of information and intrigue. I feel much of the success of this book can be attributed to the sensitivity to cultural difference the author maintains. This, together with his sleek and sophisticated style and rich empirical research, creates a very tangible sense of gay life in Russia at the dawning of a new era in country's history. Although this book should probably not be read uncritically, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand issues of sexuality and Russia better. It has the potential to shatter many pre-conceptions.
