Everybody's trying to tie in their fictions to the approach of the millennium: the next Bond movie, for instance. But it takes a writer as accomplished as Gadney to make this seem more than a meretricious gimmick. Gadney brings back Alan Rosslyn from the first- rate
Just When We Are Safest for his millennial thriller. The plot has a satisfying murkiness, with revelations cutting through a net of violence and deceit involving the zealots of the Trinity Chapter religious cult, who are preparing for the resurrection of their leader in the first minute of the first hour of the first day of the Millennium. In the vicinity of King's Cross, the body of a young American researcher, Jane Moorfield, is found on some derelict wasteland. Did she die of a massive heroine overdose? Her sister Caroline doesn't think so and enlists Rosslyn (of the business intelligence consultancy ASG) to investigate. The sinister causes of Jane's death involve both the wealthy recruits of the cult and the British security services. Gadney has invoked the shade of John Buchan for his dizzying dash to a tense New Year's Eve finale in Trafalgar Square, but the mayhem is very much in today's style, and make an already compulsive read even more addictive. --

The millennium approaches. The zealots of the Trinity Chapter religious cult are preparing for the Resurrection of their leader. Near King's Cross, the corpse of a young American researcher, Jane Moorfield, is found on some derelict wasteland. Did she die of a massive heroin overdose? Her sister, Caroline, doesn't think so, and enlists Alan Rosslyn to investigate. The sinister causes of Jane's death involve both the wealthy recruits of the cult and the British security services. There are echoes of John Buchan in this headlong dash to a tense New Year's Eve finale in Trafalgar Square, but the bloody violence is very much of the 1990s and gives this well-honed thriller a truly compelling edge.
