Product Description

Review
Immured in a beastly nursing home run by smarmy William Anderson and his foulmouthed sister Letitia Davis, Rosemary Travis, abetted by her cooperative chum Dorothy Davenport, keeps her spirits up by embroidering the horrors of life at Eventide Lodge into a baroque Golden Age mystery plot - a plot that casts each of her innocuous fellow-geriatrics as a possible suspect when Hilary Bryant dies or George Channing attempts to escape and is mauled by Anderson's Doberman. But when Dorothy, on the eve of her departure for the hospital for terminal-cancer treatment, dies of a fantastic concoction of liquor and pills, Rosemary has a real-life mystery on her hands. Or does she? Did Dorothy really kill herself?. Or was Anderson getting rid of her as expeditiously as possible? Or was the killer some other patient? Or is the whole plot one last fictional legacy of Dorothy's? Once again, Dibdin, author of Ratking and the Aurelio Zen novels (Vendetta, 1991, etc.), produces a tale as piercingly funny as Tom Stoppard - and as wise about the powers of fiction to deal with an unspeakable world. (Kirkus Reviews)

The usual country house murder with the usual cast of characters? The colonel, the playboy, the clergyman are all here - and the usual murderer. Dorothy and Rosemary need only follow the clues and the culprit will be unmasked. But things are not what they seem at Eventide Lodge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outlandish, but thoroughly entertaining, 8 Jan 2004

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Michael Dibdin may be classed as something of a virtuoso author of crime novels, with books ranging from the dark Aurelio Zen series to the very thought provoking 'The Tryst' and the nasty humour of 'Dirty Tricks.' This books is completely different to anything else he's written, and is a most enjoyable read. Set in a gruesome residential home for the elderly, Dibdin unfolds a pastiche of the Agatha Christie genre of crime novels, in which Rosemary and Dorothy play detective. However, in a characteristically Dibdin manner, there's something much more sinister underlying this story, and horrendous cruelties and degradations are exposed, having been brought to attention by the central storyline.

This is a very brief book, I read it in a few hours, but extremely good. Warmly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another of Dibdins tongue in cheek thrillers, 31 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Michael Dibdin seems to be making fun of the amateur detective (the main character is an elderly Miss Marple type figure) and the professional detective. Miss Travis is an elderly resident of an aged care facility that leaves much to be desired. With her friend Dorothy she spends her time solving murder mysteries which may not have happened. When her friend dies in suspicious circumstances she insists the police investigate the death and the other unsavoury happenings at Eventide Lodge.
