This novel is narrated by a devious, callous, selfish and conceited man, who tells his remarkable and disturbing tale with supreme arrogance and no hint of regret or shame. The story is solely concerned with the narrator, which makes this book rather different from Dibdin's other novels. Our narrator spells out how he succeded in destroying several relationships, ending lives and incriminating other people. Through all this, he assumes a position of sumpreme indifference towards everyone else, thinking only of his own desires, principally sexual and monetary, and needs.

This is a tremendous book, which I read in a day. There is much humour, albeit callous, with many passages offering cruel but amusing details of the social standing and aspirations of the people involved in the book. This ranks as one of Dibdin's finest books, which is no mean achivement.

The narrator of this novel is one of the most unpleasant and unsavoury characters in literature. He is telling in the first person the events in his life that led to him leaving England in a bit of a hurry. A couple who befriend come to a sticky end and though he is not implicated for some time, and denies murder, his devious plots to get rich quickly without having to work for it implicate him in both deaths. I found this compelling reading though I'm not a lover of black humour as a rule. The twist in the end of this tale make it all worth while.

A 40 year old "eternal student" returns from abroad, shocked and bewildered to find the Thatcher revolution in full swing, he accidentally starts an affair with the wife of a prosperous, social-climbing accountant. A development which soon plunges our urbane but directionless (anti-)hero into a labyrinth of lies, deceit, gruesome death, and the politely vicious war between the upper-middle, and lower-middle classes. If you like your humour dark, and enjoy delving into the Byzantine structure of English social strata, this well observed and witty book will amuse, entertain and appal you, and will sometimes make you laugh out loud. A glorious sting in the tail makes "Dirty Tricks" one of the most satisfying books I have read in years.
