3.0 out of 5 stars Dark, surreal- a harsh tale of human love and jealousy, 29 Jan 2003

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This story focuses on a group of girls who get lost on a walk and end up on a rock in the sea where tragedy ensures. There is a certain surreal and allegoric tone to the happenings that include rivalry, love and religion. Tennant uses Christian imagery and themes (both Catholic and Protestant) that harkens back to the relationship between Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of The Scots. A fair amount of pagan references are also included too to show the workings of nature and history around the characters.
Similar to Golding's Lord Of The Flies in story line but using girls instead of boys, perhaps because of this it is emotion not action lead.
The sense of doom permeates the story creating a quite chilling piece on human relations and jealousy. However, there is a lack of flesh to many of the characters possibly due to QOS's short length and passages written in newspaper reportage style ruin the flow of the narrative.
I would recommend this to those who like deep and dark works of fiction that ask more questions than they answer.
