During a recent Access to University course I had been having trouble with understanding exactly what was expected of me, despite having consulted several study guides and attending various academic skills seminars. Then I discovered 'The Student Skills Guide' and was immediately impressed by its layout. Practical titles, uncluttered pages, easy to follow ideas and handy hints on a myriad of topics in a structured and cohesive manner. I recently worked through the Essay Writing chapter during a recent main assignment and was rewarded with my best mark of the year. 'Proof is in the pudding' as they say. One minor criticism is the lack of examining Internet usage and its assets, but overall I recommend this as a wothwhile purchase for mature students seeking a no-nonsense handbook for their initial years of study.

I have glanced over the pages of this book and was impressed with the layout as it reviews topics such as report writing, presentations, essay writing, time management and from what i can remember (as i looked at it this afternoon) effective note taking.

This list with many others are reviewed on a basic level for beginners and then again for the reader with basic understanding of the qaulities of each topic but in a far deeper level making the reader think whilst showing the way for possible higher marks.

i recommend this book to all students not to sit and read cover to cover, but to keep with you at all times so when assingments are distributed then at least you will have a head start!!

im off to buy mine
