Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

"A unique and fascinating treasure trove of the best of British gardening " --Alan Titchmarsh

Visiting gardens is a popular British pastime and this book is an excellent guide to help you do just that; written by award-winning Kathryn Bradley-Hole, "Gardeners' World": Garden Lover's Guide to Britain contains more than 600 entries about the best gardens, nurseries, craftsmen, potters and ornament makers, discovered by the author while visiting every corner of Britain. There are detailed plans to some of the most interesting places she visited, arranged alphabetically by county with separate sections for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The range of gardens is extensive, varying from a plantsman's garden in Northumberland to an environmental centre in South Yorkshire; from a former Zen Buddhist Monk's Japanese garden in Nottinghamshire to a former rock musician's herbal garden near Bristol to a restored Victorian garden in Cornwall. Those featured are regularly open with just a few exceptions.

This is a very easy-to-use guide, containing information on structure, plans, maps, garden highlights and essential visitor information. Special features are indicated throughout by symbols to denote "must-see" gardens and seasonal highlights. There are comprehensive lists, including the nation's best gardens, specialist plant collections and a unique Internet directory of garden Web sites. Also included are the favourite gardens of celebrity gardeners including Roy Lancaster and Ann Swithenbank.

As Adam Pascoe so rightly says: "Whatever your reason for visiting gardens, there is no better way to get the best from your day out than in the company of an experienced guide, a role Kathryn Bradley-Hole admirably fulfils in this book. Combining her plant knowledge and gardening experience with a love of gardens, their creation and the stories behind them, she uncovers a wealth of gardens we can all enjoy". --Susan Naylor

5.0 out of 5 stars A reliable guide to UK gardens, 24 Aug 2002
By A Customer
I bought some UK guide books to plan a little tour with some friends but this is the one we have used all the time. It has taken us to the best English Gardens. Also some very interesting plant nurseries and shops, such as pot makers. Also garden bookshops where we spent hours when it was raining. (Wisley books shop is very good.) All the important information is here.Where to find a garden with directions precisely. The maps and the opening times and if you can find a cafe there. Or some English tea.

We are already planing another visit in the autumn and this guide teils you which are the best places to see at the different times of the year and which are the best gardens to see if you only have a very short time in one area. It is without doubt now my favouriet English guide book and I trust the descriptions as they have been absolutely accurate and entertaining every time so far. We have nothing as good as this in the Netherlands. Please come to see us, Gardeners World Guide!

Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars nice to use and with all the details you need, 16 Aug 2000
By A Customer
We're enjoying using this handbook to gardens which has introduced us to some horticultural treasures on our own doorstep, and others further afield. It makes our occasional weekends away very enjoyable, even in the rain! the garden plans are a good idea. How about some more in the next edition?

5.0 out of 5 stars well laid out. easy to use with good maps, 11 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Sometimes you just want to get out at the weekend and have a nose around what other people are doing with their gardens. This area-by-area guide is a revelation. Many of them are much bigger plots than most of us have to grapple with, but that doesnt mean we can't pick up some ideas to take home along the way.

This book takes the worry out of wondering whether a place signposted off the road is going to be open or not, how to get there, and whether you can find something to eat while your about it.

Descriptions are long enough to give you a good idea about whether a garden is likely to interest you. some have amusing details you probably wont find anywhere else. People like the eccentric Marchoiness of Londonderry at Mount Stewart (great garden too), who's snake tattooed leg was only made public in the 1920s when fashions for shorter skirts arrived. Or the man who invented hydro-electricity who's garden still exists in Northumberland. This guidebook opened my eyes to some great outings. I just wish petrol was a bit cheaper to get to see more!
