3.0 out of 5 stars As usual, more style than substance, 16 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This disappointed me as it is style over substance. As a novice gardener and garden designer, I was hoping to get some tips on how to get started, how to make a garden work, and also to see lots of wonderful examples. I was also hoping it would show you how to assess your own space, to help choose what is appropriate.
There's not that many examples at all, just one of each of her "types", such as "modern", "minimalist" etc.
A bit disappointing, but I don't really regret buying it, as it is very prettily produced, and the gardens that are included are lovely.
But I'm none the wiser as to how to get started on my own garden.
The text is very general, and contains very little real information.

5.0 out of 5 stars The essential guide to gardening in small spaces., 28 Jun 2002
By Adam A Huckle (Bristol United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
If you're planning to make use of your urban garden space this book is a must have. Rachel de Thame has written a very readable guide complete with practical, manageable, and affordable ideas on how to transform your city garden. All tastes and levels of experience are catered for, and I found the advice to be clearly presented, in conjunction with useful case studies. The styles range from the traditional family garden to the minimalist modern. I was particularly impressed with the originality of the subject, as most gardening books I have read cater solely for those with an enormous expanse of green. It was refreshing to find a book which sought to dispel the misconception that towns and gardens are incompatible. Highly recommended.
