Product Description

Heat Magazine

"A beautiful, well-designed book"

Product Description

Most gardens have some sort of patio. Indeed, for many urbanites it is their entire garden - somewhere to relax, sunbathe, entertain and even grow things. With so many demands on it, the design of the patio is crucial and Diarmuid Gavin pushes back the boundaries, showing how to make the best of use of this most important aprt of the garden. Aimed at non-gardeners and style-conscious home-owners, this book is full of stylish ideas and practical projects to transform your outdoor room. Subjects cover: paving, water features, eating and entertaining, plants, boundaries, furniture and accessories. It also includes a comprehensive reference section that explains basic construction techniques, from laying paving to putting up trellis.

1.0 out of 5 stars Verging on vanity publishing..., 25 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This is a hopelessly inadequate book, badly designed with pictures and text both too small. The hardboard covers are thicker than the pages they enclose; it would have been better printed as a stapled booklet, to be sent out as a free mailing to advertise the TV series of the same name. Gardeners shouldn't expect to be given full botanical names for all the plants featured; genus names alone may be easy on the eye, but are hopeless if you actually want to acquire anything shown.
A cheap, money-spinning ploy on the part of the author and his publisher. If you're interested in contemporary garden design, check out Joe Swift's 'The Plant Room' - another BBC book but one with much more integrity and not burdened with the author's ego. Shabby.

1.0 out of 5 stars Style over substance., 28 Jul 2001

Unlike the excellent ground force books, planet patio is a fancy cover with little else. The photos are too arty to gain much useful information from, and the text does not explain how anything in the book was achieved. If you have seen a show and want to know more then DON'T buy this book as the T.V. show provides far more information. I know Diarmuid and the BBC can do better.
