"Too much Holmes is no more likely than too much foie gras and no less desirable... Will delight his fans" -- Observer --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective is one of the most enduringly popular sleuths of all time. It is with great pride that the "BBC Radio Collection" has been able to publish, for what we believe to be the first time on audio, all the Arthur Conan Doyle stories and novels featuring Holmes and Watson. Our eighteen-volume series has the consistency of the same team of directors, producers, dramatisers and leading actors - Clive Merrison as Holmes and Michael Williams as Watson. Acclaim for the series has been widespread: "A remarkable undertaking - the dramatisation of all 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories. Applauding them, and particularly Clive Merrison's Holmes, made my hands sore." - Peter Davalle, "The Times". This box set, containing all eighteen volumes, is a highly collectable item for the many devotees of Sherlock Holmes. The box also includes a book written by the series' dramatiser, Bert Coules, which takes a look behind the scenes at the highs and lows that came with the undertaking of such an enormous project.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta Get This!, 29 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I'll be honest, I have no idea what made me chose to buy the entire collection of all 4 novels and 56 stories in paperback I have No idea.

But I did it, and in three months I read them all, cover-to-cover. And then I cried at the end cause there were no more stories. After I finished I listened again to the Rathone/Bruce series. The actors, the stories, they were all great, but there was soemthing I couldn't put my finger on...something....not quite right.

After reading the stories, I knew what that something was. Watson was stupid. At least that was the radio's take on it. And Holmes was kinda a Know-It-All who magically had all the answers without saying why. It bugged me. So I went as my brother put it "hunting for the real Holmes and Watson".

I found them in Clive Merrison and Michael Williams. This duo make Holmes and Watson more..realistic. Portrayed by Michael Williams, Dr. John H. Watson is what I've been advocating for so long: He is not stupid (you don't become any kind of a doctor by being stupid.)..he's just not Sherlock Holmes. Clive Merrison's Sherlock Holmes is not infalliable, and in fact seems more human than the one's I'd grown up with. The sound effects and scripting allow you to see rather than sit and be told what's going on.

I think what I like best about this version is the way it deals with things that remain a mystery in the books. The Canon never actually show us Profesor Moriarty. The Valley of Fear, the Final Problem, he makes...I'd say guest appearances. Watson still of course never sees him, but the audience does....

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 30 Jun 2000
By A Customer
I enjoyed this book, greatly. Why? Because Conan Doyle manages not to make the culprit painfully obvious, which I have found in many crime thrillers. I started reading Sherlock Holmes at the age of 11, and I still never grow tired of them. My particular favorite being the great Hound of the Baskervilles, of which I still find extremely exhilarating. A well worth buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic!, 1 Mar 2004
By Tori "foxxie52" (Herne Bay, Kent) - See all my reviews
This hardcover volume contains the complete works of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It contains "A Study in Scarlet", "The Sign of Four", "The adventures of Sherlock Holmes", "Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes", "The Return of Sherlock Holmes", the acclaimed classic, "The Hound of the Baskervilles", "The Valley of Fear", "His Last Bow", and "The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes". It really is the complete complete works. It tells of Watson's first meeting with Sherlock Holmes and all the small case they solve (or rather Holmes solves, Watson goes "ahhhh")

The whole book is attractively bound and would make an excellent gift. The hard back cover and dust jacket make it look like it's worth alot more than Amazon charge!

I would recommend this book to anyone, and I mean anyone. Most people who haven't read Sherlock Holmes turn their nose up at it. I was the same. Then I read it! After all, it's elementary, dear reader!!!!!! Sorry, couldn't resist!
