Product Description

Product Description

The Colosseum in Rome is one of the world's most amazing buildings. Built over 10 years during the reign of the Emperor Vespasiano in c. 72AD, at 160 feet high this immense oval stadium was home to the most violent and deadly spectator sports in history, and the making of many 'gladiator' heroes. Using state-of-the-art computer graphics, Colosseum brings the world of Ancient Rome to life and shows how and why this most extraordinary of human monuments was built. New research debunks the myths perpetuated in the film Gladiator and helps us understand the nature of these games - why the chariot races of Gladiator could not have happened within the Colosseum walls, for instance. Here for the first time, new evidence reveals exactly how the Colosseum was regularly flooded with water for the spectacle of deadly sea battles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Behind-the-walls look at Rome's Flavian Amphitheatre, 20 April 2004

If you were disappointed with the BBC documentary programme of the same title, you should not be dissuaded from buying a copy of this book which achieves what television did not.

Whereas the TV focus was on the life of Verus the gladiator, the book's broad coverage of all aspects of the Roman games and the huge Flavian Amphitheatre we know as the Colosseum adds to ones understanding of not only the building but the gladiatorial combat and other displays within its arena.

I bought the book as background reading for the Classical Studies element of a university course in the Humanities and, despite the dismissive attitude of academics towards what they describe as "coffee table books", this work deserves greater respect. Certainly its lavish illustration complements a text that is easy to follow, even when describing construction materials and techniques.

Entertaining and educational, its portable size makes for ideal highbrow reading material even on the train and it won't take a lot of room up on your coffee table either.

5.0 out of 5 stars TV not soooo bad....., 20 Feb 2009

To be fair to the BBC, the tv programme is gripping and IDEAL for 13 year old Latin students; and yes, that's in a public-sector school. The book is magnificent for any level, however.
