Product Description

Product Description

From the beginning of recorded history, the River Nile has been a blessing in an otherwise barren, inhospitable world. Over 5000 years ago the river's fertile valley gave rise to one of the world's first and greatest civilizations: ancient Egypt. Every year, almost without fail, vital floodwaters replenished the rich farming land along the river's banks but the ancient Egyptians never understood how the flood was generated or why it occasionally failed. Instead they invented a complex mythology to explain the cycles of the river, and rarely ventured beyond their safe, god-given valley to explore upstream. The mystery of how the Nile came to be such a powerful, fluctuating force tormented people for thousands of years. Huge natural barriers south of Egypt restricted knowledge, but as the centuries passed, explorers braved rapids, swamps, precipitous gorges, jungles, wild animals and debilitating diseases to push further and further up the river, each time bringing back new clues. "Nile" reveals the true story of this great river. Beginning with an intriguing exploration of the world of ancient Egypt, we take a modern journey upstream as the river splits into its two main arms, the White Nile and Blue Nile. Along the way, we discover the spectacular Blue Nile gorge - Africa's Grand Canyon. Here, every year, the river swells to 400 times its dry-season size as it rages towards the sea, thousands of miles to the north.

This Book accompanies the ground breaking BBC series 'Nile'. The book full of magnificent pictures and extremely detailed descriptions. This book is a must for any watcher of the series. The book is fantastic and a great reference guide to anyone who wants to know anything about the Nile.

4.0 out of 5 stars nile, 8 Jun 2008
By G. I. Forbes (edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This an excellent book with a very good text and outstanding pictures. The book is divided into 3 parts a)the story of the Nile as it related to ancuent Egypt b)a graphic description of the thec great flood that occurs each year replenishing the river and c)an account of the explorers who were desperate to find the source. Amajor failing of the book is that many place names recorded in the text are not shown on the relative maps.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nile Review, 15 Mar 2008
`Nile' is designed as a companion to the BBC series of the same name and at 160 pages is of a standard size for its type. In features three main sections - Ancient Egypt, the Nile flood, and the search for the source. These it explains in reasonable detail with captioned photographs to illustrate the text.

The main problem with the book is that although it was written by the BBC Natural History Unit, it includes very little about the flora and fauna of the region with just a page here and there, concentrating much more on the various people who live / lived on the banks of the Nile. This is disappointing as the wildlife of the Nile is one of the most diverse in the world. Its absence forms a big hole in the book and should have been given a section of its own.

One mistake the BBC made with this book was to have it written by the same people who made the series. Although this would seem to make sense it does leave the book as little more than a condensed repetition of what was on TV. A separate author, writing parallel to the series would have been wiser.

With the exception of a couple of double-page landscapes the photography is average and better work can be found in many publications. They are all taken as stills from the series and are not as impressive when printed on paper.

I have given `Nile' three stars as if you haven't seen the TV series it will give you a detailed explanation of some aspects of life on the Nile. However it is still heavily flawed and certainly not worth the £20 retail price.
