Product Description

For over forty years, the Doctor has battled against the monsters and villains in the universe. This book brings together the best or rather the worst of his enemies. Discover why the Daleks were so deadly; how the Yeti invaded London; the secret of the Loch Ness Monster; and how the Cybermen have survived. Learn who the Master was, and above all how the Doctor defeated them all. Whether you read it on or behind the sofa, this book provides a wealth of information about the monsters and villains that have made "Doctor Who" the tremendous success it has been over the years, and the galactic phenomenon that it is today.

About the Author

Justin Richards is the Creative Consultant for the BBC’s range of Doctor Who books, and has written a fair few of them himself. As well as writing for stage, screen and audio, he is also the author of The Invisible Detective and Time Runners series of novels for children, and Agent Alfie for younger readers.

As well as collaborating with thriller writer Jack Higgins, he writes standalone novels for older children including The Death Collector, The Chaos Code, and The Parliament of Blood.

Justin lives in Warwick, with his wife, two children and a nice view of the castle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some new, plus same old, 28 May 2005
By dogbarkssome (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Monsters and Villains is the first new Doctor Who reference book released since the new 2005 TV series, and attemps to tie together the 'classic' and new series by showcasing 17 of the most famous monsters and villains. This book will be best enjoyed by new fans who have never seen the old series, as the sections on the old foes (namely Cybermen, Haemovores, Ice Warriors, The Master, The Morbius Monster, Silurians and Seas Devils, Sontarans, Yeti and Zygons) are just regurgitation of old storylines and facts that will be familiar to all old Who fans. Thankfully the covering of creatures from the new series (including updated Daleks and Autons, plus the numerous new aliens from The End of the World, and the Slitheen) will be of interest to old and new fans alike, particularly for Russel T Davies new short background fiction pieces, which help fill in nice little details about the characters (in particular following up the throwaway transsexual gender remark made by villain Cassandra from The End of the World with details of the skin-girl's youth as a boy). What is unfortunately a little frustrating is that the volume is by no means comprehensive - not only concerning the old series but also the new (so there are none of the Reapers here from Father's Day, or the Jagrafess from The Long Game, the gas-mask creatures from The Empty Child etc), so expect a volume 2 next year. A nice but by no means essential extra item, recommended either for entirely new Doctor Who fans or those existing fans so obsessive they want every available bit of info on the new monsters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real treat!, 8 Feb 2006

This production from BBC Enterprises is a smashing effort! Great design, glossy look, factual and well-presented; a must for any self-respecting Doctor Who fan; old or new.
The book includes sections on all the key DW enemies since the show's inception in 1963. Daleks, Cybermen, The Master, The Sontarans and The Yeti are all included as well as new villains such as The Slitheen, Reapers and Cassandra. Key facts, as well as new information on all the stories featuring these and other enemies of The Doctor are incoporated in the book in superb detail and bold colour.
Here's hoping the book will be updated to include The Sycorax and whatever dastardly creatures that Series 2 throws up...

I think It is a very good book.it tells you about a lot of the monsters that the doctor has had to face.it also has script extracts from the 1st series of doctor who and tells you when the monster first appeared in doctor who.
