Alwena Lamping (BTW, great name) has produced a really helpful guide, that combines ease of use with a comprehensive guide to Italian grammar. The most user-friendly aspect is that there are many different ways to find exactly what you need: the index and chapter headings are very clear. I also like the way that unnecessary detail is left out: you are given, for example, four regular verbs, which cover most of what you need, without repreating basically the same information. All in all, this is probably the most useful Italian laguage book I have used.

An attractively laid out, easy to follow grammar book. Clearly written and very comprehensive, it is not over-complicated and is therefore an ideal reference grammar for first-time learners...

If like me you are trying to learn Italian from audio-based courses such as Michel Thomas or "Learn in your Car" then a grammar book can be an enormous help. It explains the rules that the "learn by example" school don't tell you about, and this helps it all make sense.

There are many Italian grammar books, and they all say the same sort of thing in the same sort of order. This one seems the best for me. It's quite small. It covers everything I'll ever need without getting technical or bogged down in detail. The typography is clear, although the design is a little bit dated. Each short chapter covers one topic and gives realistic examples of usage. There is a proper table of contents and an index. Recommended.
