4.0 out of 5 stars "Another sherry, Henry?" "Ooooh, I don't mind if I do...", 23 Dec 2000
By Neil Mcgowan "concert promoter & producer" (Moscow, Russia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Long, long ago, when Craggy Island was still uninhabited... there was a radio comedy program about a wily if massively inefficient Priest.. who, oddly enough, was assisted by a young, naive and dense Novice, and also had a retired drunken old Priest living with them. Sound at all familiar?

The format, and the quality is the same, but this time the target is the frumpy world of the Anglican Cathedral Close - on the other side of which lives the nemesis of this terrible trio - The Dean. Dodging the Dean's puritanical purges to indulge in tea, cakes, and sherry becomes the daily bread of this series.

A very young Derek Nimmo (fresh from appearing as exactly the same character in "Oh Brother!" on ITV - which the Beeb neatly avoid mentioning) stars, but the real fun comes from the crusty older characters.

Defying the Beeb's usual ability to choose less-good episodes because they starred famous guest performers, this 4-episode compliation includes the best of all - "The Railway Game", aka "Only Three Can Play".

Subtle stuff, and wryly observed.
