This book takes Huysmans' hero Durtal (who also features in other works by the author, including La Bas) on a spiritual journey, closely mirroring that taken by the author himself. Huysmans has extraordinary taste, and this is bestowed also on Durtal, who's extreme artisitc discrimination leads him to a love of Early (Catholic) Church art, in particular the plain chant. This in turn allows Durtal to begin a spiritual journey of the Mystic branch of the Catholic Church. Durtal's journey is very accessible: many of the doubts, transformations and revelations he experiences are very human and realistic. But they also go beyond that, to describe the exstasies and torments of a Mystic spiritual conversion. It is a very demanding book, but equally rewarding.

It is a deeply moving book, which gives the reader an idea of the humility, wisdom and simplicity of the better churchmen encountered. It compels the reader to be likewise.

It is not without beneficial side-effects. Personally, I smiled many times at the author's criticisms of many of the artisitc works encountered or mentioned in the book, be they architectural, musical, written or otherwise. The decadence of Against Nature is more or less removed, but the intense addiction and sensitivity towards art remain strong. Also, I was enlightened greatly as to the extent of the Church's knowledge and expertise in spiritual matters...it seems obvious, but you really get an idea of another world that used to exist.
