Although chronologically the second book in the Merryll Manning series, "The Health Farm Murders" was originally published first. (The first novel in the twelve-book series is Merryll Manning: Trapped on Mystery Island). Although it went through two hardcover editions, and garnered some fine reviews, "The Health Farm Murders" has never appeared in paperback until now. In her Book Review, the critic, Selwa Anthony, commented, "John Howard Reid is an Australian Agatha Christie!" to which Richard Deutch penned a riposte in The Sunday Telegraph, "I find the comparison a little unfair -- to Mr Reid. If Reid's work needs comparing, I would liken it to...Graham Greene."
